  • The book, as if it had not worked mischief捣蛋 enough, had been for-gotten, and Cecil must go back for it; and George, who loved passionately, must blunder冲撞 against her in the narrow path.
"No—" she gasped, and, for the second time, was kissed by him. As if no more was possible, he slipped back;退下去

      Lucy/M, George/F
She just said: "I can't have it, Mr. Emerson. I cannot even talk to you. Go out of this house, and never come into it again as long as I live here—" flushing脸红 as she spoke and pointing to the door. "I hate a row吵架. Go please."
      "What—"
      "No discussion."
      "But I can't—"
She shook her head. "Go, please. I do not want to call in Mr. Vyse."叫Cecil进来
"You don't mean," he said, absolutely ignoring Miss Bartlett— "you don't mean that you are going to marry that man?"
      The line这句话 was unexpected.
She shrugged her shoulders, as if his vulgarity粗鲁 wearied厌倦 her. "You are merely ridiculous," she said quietly.
Then his words rose gravely严肃 over hers: "You cannot live with Vyse. He's only for an acquaintance一般朋友. He is for society and cultivated优雅 talk. He should know no one intimately, least of all a woman."
It was a new light on Cecil's character.新看法
"Have you ever talked to Vyse without feeling tired?"
      "I can scarcely discuss—"
"No, but have you ever? He is the sort who are all right so long as they keep to things—books, pictures—but kill枯燥 when they come to people.
That's why I'll speak out through all this muddle even now. It's shocking enough to lose you in any case, but generally a man must deny himself joy舍弃快乐, and I would have held back if your Cecil had been a different person. I would never have let myself go.
      go放纵,指(go for that matter)
I would have held back你深爱我么?

      G/F继续
      Therefore因此—not 'therefore I kissed you,'
