"Perhaps," said Miss Bartlett, "it is something that we had better not hear."
"To speak plainly," said Mr. Eager, "it is. I will say no more." For the first time Lucy's rebellious thoughts swept out in words—for the first time in her life.
从这里开始，Lucy/M说话了。
"You have said very little."
Eager/F说话了。
"It was my intention to say very little," was his frigid冷冷地 reply.
He gazed indignantly愤慨地 at the girl, who met him with equal indignation. She turned towards him from the shop counter; her breast heaved起伏 quickly. He observed her brow前额, and the sudden strength of her lips. It
was intolerable that she should disbelieve him.
额？因为什么而不相信F？不明白。
"Murder, if you want to know," he cried angrily. "That man murdered his wife!"
居然当面指责M对自己犯罪，昏。。。我终于明白长旅中的那个墓碑是怎么来的了。
"How?" she retorted.反问
这一个字，简直能气四人。
"To all intents and purposes he murdered her. That day in Santa Croce—did they say anything against me?"
反正不管怎么说，是你杀了过去的我。在那个教堂参观过程里，大概M是跟别人一起走动的。
"Not a word, Mr. Eager—not a single word."
"Oh, I thought they had been libelling诽谤 me to you. But I suppose it is only their personal charms that makes you defend them."
