如果一个名词作形容词的结构很难理解的话，译者就需要修改这个句子以厘清词语之间的关系了，下面是三种原则性的修改方法，和一个补充的替换方法。
1.这种结构可以当做名词泛滥的其他形式来处理。即当有两个或三个名词连在一起时，其中一个可以转换为其他的词性。
接下来有一些例句：
A：measures adopted by local governments in soil erosion control include the following地方政府在防止水土流失方面采取的措施包括以下这些
B：measures adopted by local governments to control soil erosion include the following地方政府采取了包括以下这些措施来防止水土流失
[在这里，名词修饰语改成了动词，soil erosion水土流失成为了control控制的宾语]
A：the Party's expanded leadership capacity in struggles该党提升了在斗争中的领导能力。
B：the Party's expanded capacity to lead struggles该党提升了领导斗争的能力。
[在这句话中，还是把名词改成了动词，通过重整语序使得句子之间的关系变得更好理解]
在特定情况下，将一个名词改成其它词性也能破坏掉更长的一连串名词结构。
A：China's meteorological system modernization drive中国的气象系统现代化建设
B：China's drive to modernize its meteorological system中国建设现代化气象系统
A：the reform of the science and technology management system改革科技管理系统
B：the reform of the system for managing science and technology科技管理体制改革
A：the State assets management institutions国有资产管理机构
B：the institutions responsible for managing State assets负责管理国有资产的机构
在第一个例句中，一个名词改成了动词，第二个和第三个例句中，名词改成了动名词，名词短语中的其他名词变成了动名词的宾语。这样一来，一组没有区别的长串名词变成了有语法结构连接的短语。
2.在有些两个或三个名词组成的结构中，可以将名词不做改动，但是要引入一个介词来展示名词之间的关系。
A：during the economic recovery period in the early 1950s在1950年代早期的经济复苏期间
B：during the period of economic recovery in the early 1950s在1950年代早期的经济复苏期间（中文根本没有差别，但是英语中不接受过长的名词）
A：scientific and technological experts now take part in economic and social policy decisions科学家和技术人员在现在参与经济和社会政策决定
B：scientists and technicians now take part in decisions on economic and social policy现在科学家和技术人员参与在经济和社会政策方面的决定
A：research topic selection should also be guided by the market研究课题选择应该由市场主导
B：the selection of research topics should also be guided by the market研究课题的选择应该由市场主导。
这种方法有时候也可以用来解决长串名词的问题。当选用了恰当的介词时，就算是很长的名词串也会变得很容易理解：
A：Golmud is an important personnel and materials transfer center格尔木是重要的人员和物资转运中心
B：Golmud is an important center for the transfer of personnel and materials格尔木是一个重要的用于人员和物资转运的中心
A：Wan Wenpeng, leader of the provincial drug abuse control consultancy expert grou
p他是省级禁毒咨询专家组组长
B：Wan Wenpeng, leader of the province's group of expert consultants on the control of drug abuse他是省禁毒方面的专家组组长
[注意这里的抽象名词consultancy咨询工作改成了具体名词consultants咨询顾问]
3.有时候使用连字符也能达到明晰句意的效果。选一个名词词组“two noun combinations that form compound adjectives两个名词组合形成复合形容词”。这样的表达让读者疑惑不解。
使用介词来连接名词可以立刻消除疑惑。“combinations of two nouns that form compound adjectives两个名词，组合形成了复合形容词”这样就很明显地表达出我们说的不是两个组合，而是两个名词。
但是如果我们使用连字符也是一样的效果。如果我们写的是 two-noun combinations that form compound adjectives，那么久表示two修饰的是noun，two和noun一起修饰combination。
同样，为了确保读者没有任何短暂的误解，mobile phone users移动电话用户可以改为users of mobile phones移动电话的用户或者 mobile-phone users移动电话的用户。
也有不少这样的使用连字符构成了形容词，所以读者在看一些简单的词语时会一闪而过，没有任何疑惑。比如说 twentieth-century writers二十世纪的作家，a fur-bearing animal一个毛皮动物等等。但是除了这些常用的连字符构成的复合词之外，最好还是使用介词结构会更直接，更好理解。
如果你决定要使用连字符，你应该仔细考虑它的位置和组成的复合词的位置。从英语母语者日常写的英语可以看出来，在这些问题上粗心大意会导致句意含糊混乱。
比如说，美国一所幼儿园在招聘“3-year-old teacher三岁的老师”，补充说“experienced preferred有经验者优先”，这里建议改为寻找“teacher of 3-year-olds三岁孩子的老师”。如果美国的癌症诊所提出女性每个月要做“self-breast exam自我胸部检查”，而不是说examine their breast every month每月检查她们的胸部，则会导致一个疑问：self-breast是什么呢？（这也有助于避免中式英语中的不必要名词结构）
4.有时候译者要试着把太多信息塞入一个由名词作形容词的短语中，以致于上述的方法都不能奏效。再次重申，就像名词泛滥的最后一种补充替代方案一样，常规方法不能用的时候，替换方案是增加一些词语来重新阐明语义。
A： In addition, we should encourage workers to make technological innovation, and put forward rationalization suggestions此外，我们应该鼓励员工进行技术创新，提出合理化建议。
B：In addition, we should encourage workers to make technological innovations and to suggest ways of rationalizing production此外，我们应该鼓励工人进行技术革新，并提出使生产合理化的办法
A：The establishment of a local specialties company will enable us to use our foreign exchange effectively.建立当地的专业公司能够使我们有效利用我们的外汇
B：If we establish a company for the export of local specialties，we shall be able to use our foreign exchange effectively
