5、My Favorite Character ...
-
Andy Dufresen is my favorite character in the movie. From a young and successful banker, his life changes drastically when he is convicted and sentenced to two life imprisonments for killing his wife and her lover. During the first couple of years of his imprisonment, he is assaulted by "the Sisters," a group of prisoners who sexually harass other prisoners. Although Andy persistently resists and fights back, he is still beaten brutally on a regular basis, but he never gives in.
My first impression about him is he is a tough and resilient man. A man born with a silver spoon in the mouth and has achieved so much, it is hard to swallow life in a jailhouse. The drastic change would break any ordinary people on the first day, let alone the dreadful endless prison life. But Andy endures all these and utilizes his expertise to make bargains with the warden and the guards. He also transforms a storage room into the best prison library in New England. He helps dozens of illiterate prisoners to get their high school equivalents. What he does make you wonder how a prisoner can accomplish all these.
Andy tells us the answer himself: there is something deep inside your body that people cannot touch or get to, that is hope. Prison is where people become lost, abandon themselves; but with hope, you can dig a way out with only a six-inch rock hammer and 19 years. Andy’s unique character attracts me most, he maintains optimism in a hopeless and corrupt place where nobody values this quality.
