"Adeline, I can take you to Shanghai. I have a shipment going there. Your brother and I will take you to see for yourself what the world outside is truly like."
"you must not leave my sight or your brother's. You may move only within the International Settlement. You are not to go to the war zones. You may look, you may write, you may take photographs—I will not stop you. I have already made arrangements with the Nationalists. Once you are in Shanghai, you may interview whomever you wish."
"If you agree, I will take you. If you do not—" 他盯着阿黛利,没有说完。
"Very well."
"But I want to see their soldiers."
"Then it is settled. I will have the maid pack your things."
"Adeline, we still have time. Take your trunk to your cabin first."
"Your cabin is on B deck, by the window." he said, "Father chose it himself. He said it would be easier for you to watch the sea. They are selling oysters over there—would you like some?"
"Didn't we just have them this morning?"
"Father is in the next room." If you need anything, just knock on the wall."
"Adeline."
"Yes?"
"When we reach Shanghai, do not wander off."
"Come in."
"You got seasick the first time you were on a ship. The seasick pills are on the table."
"Take one. It will help."
"Father."
"Adeline."
"Do you know what I fear most?"
"It is not that you will disappoint me."
"What I fear most is that one day I will receive a telegram telling me you are dead. And I will not even know where you are."
"I will not die."
"Bullets do not have eyes. But I cannot stay by your side forever. That is why I brought your brother."
"Then why did you not bring Second Brother as well?"
"Your Second Brother?"
"He has his own affairs. Besides, your brother is more careful than I am."
"Father." 她说,
"I am not going to my death. I am going... to see."
"To see what?"
"To see what has become of this world."
"Father, you sit in your office in Boston and read the news in the papers, and it seems like nothing more than news. But people are truly dying. People are truly going hungry. People are truly—"
"I know." 他说,
"I know what you wish to see. That is why I am taking you to Shanghai. You may look, you may write, you may take photographs. But Adeline—"
"—you must remain within my sight or your brother's."
"That is my only condition."
"Very well."
"Tomorrow morning, I will have the kitchen send you some oysters."
"You loved them when you were a child."
