"Adeline, are you all right? Father asked me to come check on you."
"I am fine."
"Mother sent a letter from Paris. It just arrived."
"Have a look. Would you like to write back?"
"She knows?"
"Yes. She was quite furious in her letter to Father."
"She says you ran off to Shanghai without a word, without so much as a goodbye, and made Father drag himself all over the place with you. Mother says next time she is back, she will come to the dock herself to fetch you, so you cannot slip away again."
"Mother says she will be back later."
"Yes, she said as much."
"Were you not clamoring to go out and see things? Why have you been cooped up in the hotel these past few days instead of going to the military camp to interview the soldiers?"
"I... feel a bit sick. Not yet."
"Are you not accompanying Father on his business meetings?"
"Business?"
"Business with whom? Those people are all fleeing for their lives. There is no business to be done."
"Father has met with three men in uniform these past two days. One surnamed Qian—you have met him. The other two I have not seen, but judging by Father's manner, they carry considerable weight."
"I am not sure what they discussed. Father did not let me be present. But I overheard the word 'dock.'"
"There is also something else. Father said something."
"What did he say?"
"He said: 'If she sees too much, she will not want to come back.'"
"I do not understand what he meant. But I think..."
"I think there are things in this city that Father does not want you to see. Not because they are dangerous. But because once you see them, you can never forget."
"Drink this first."
"Father has been arranging things these past few days."
"Packing, booking passage, checking which ships are still running."
"Where are we going? Are we going home?"
"Mother's letter arrived today."
"Father read it before I came up. That is why he sent me."
"Adeline."
“That photograph in your camera—the one you took in Hongkou. Do not develop it, and do not show it to anyone, until you have left China.”
"Father says the ship leaves the morning after tomorrow."
"Brother."
"What have you seen?"
"I have seen what you have seen."
"And I have seen more."
"That photograph is not just a photograph. It is evidence."
"Do not develop it. Not here. Not now."
"Brother."
"Is what the Nationalists say... true or false?"
"You should go to the Drunken Wind Tower tonight."
"I believe you will find the answer you are looking for. Tomorrow I will take you to see Shanghai's 'slums.'"
"Where would you like to go, Miss?"
"Miss Winter, what are you doing here?"
"Tell me the truth. Does the Chief of Staff come here often?"
"Miss Winter, Major Sun asked me to buy rouge. He said the rouge from the Drunken Wind Tower is good, so here I am."
"Whether the Chief of Staff comes here or not—I am only an interpreter. I have no authority to know, nor should I."
"Why are you here? Did my father send you to find me?"
"No, no. Just here to buy rouge."
"Miss Winter, I advise you not to linger here. This place is not good for your reputation."
"Ah Bin," 她说,
"The Chief of Staff did not come here to conduct business, did he?"
"Miss Winter, I do not know."
"But you just said the doorman only smiles for regulars."
"You are very familiar with this place. You mentioned Major Sun. That alone tells me officers like them come here often."
"Miss Winter, I am only an interpreter. I take my salary and do my job."
"Chief of Staff Qian is a complicated man."
"Complicated?"
"Some men are good in one place, and in another... they are different."
"Do you understand?"
"Miss Winter,"
"You had best do the same—do not look, do not ask."
