Framework for environmental monitoring: Xi’an Qujiang Pool
1.Setting monitoring program objectives
Qujiang Pool is an urban landscape water body known as the \"lung of the city\". It located in Qujiang Pool Relic Park (QPRP), which is a rare super-large waterscape park in Northwest China and 7 communities and 1 primary school nearby. The area of Qujiang Pool is about 33000 m2 and the length is 1088 meters from north to south. The width is different from east to west, and the widest cross profile is 552 meters. As a landscape water body, the closed slow-flow water body of Qujiang Pool has poor fluidity, small water capacity, poor self-regulation function, and easy deterioration of water quality. The Qujiang Pool environmental monitoring framework will focus on the environmental management of water quality indicators, their changes, trends and the actions needed to maintain the health of the urban landscape water ecosystem. The test indexes include water temperature (T), total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), nitrite nitrogen (NO2-N), total phosphorus (TP) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). For defining information requirements, key stakeholders have been identified as visitors to QPRP, nearby community residents, and teachers and students at the elementary school. Compiled available information has been included previous surveillance data, media reports, and research articles. A conceptual process model will be created to facilitate public understanding of the geophysical and chemical processes of water quality indicators. The purpose of this monitoring plan is to determine each individual index of water quality along the Qujiang Pool and analyze its temporal and spatial distribution, so as to evaluate the current situation of water quality in the Qujiang Pool.
