Thank you chair, thank you delegates:
Spain, since the 15th century, has been flourishing in the benefits that the marine provided. Consequently, Spain believes that marine protection in the construction of floating cities should be addressed.
In order to effectively discuss this topic, we would like to propose the following facts stated by the UNESCO:
The ocean constitutes over 90% of the habitable space on the planet. (The marine shows great prospects for human future)
Commercial overexploitation of the world’s fish stocks is so severe that it has been estimated that up to 13 percent of global fisheries have ‘collapsed.’ (Global economy also relies on the marine)
Technological change and the emergence of new economic opportunities such as deep-sea mining, more intensive fishing, and deeper oil and gas drilling increase risks to areas that historically were not under threat. Moreover, between 30 and 35 percent of the global extent of critical marine habitats such as seagrasses, mangroves and coral reefs are estimated to have been destroyed. (Why we need to protect the marine)
Hence, Spain has mentioned many ways to protect the marine, hope all delegates have read it. However, Spain would like to reaffirm some points:
Countries should:
Increase marine protected areas
Share scientific information that are helpful to minimise destruction of coastal cities
Develop materials that do not decompose after immersing in the sea
Build the cities on land and tow the to sea
Finally, Spain urges all countries to give priority to the building of the floating cities
That is all, thank you.
