The story is about a girl, who lived a very miserable childhood.
Iris , luckily born in DL town in 1900s, is now 3 years old. Everything is wonderful, she has a happy family with loved parents, new born sister Grace and the deep love of her godparents.
Iris’s godparents ,the Byrons are local people, they are kind、nice and friendly persons as all their friends know. After Iris’s parents Len Smith and Amy sharp came to town, they became best friends and neighbors, because the relationship between two family is getting closer and closer, it seems natural that Iris becomes their daughter. Life was easy and happy for everyone back then. However, things changed unpredictably, a very bad illness just was befell Iris one day.
Everyone was panic about Iris’s condition, suddenly, her father became a another person, he put all his heart and attention to that poor girl, he took his beloved daughter run around among every hospital they went, without eating、drinking, even a short time rest. All he wanted is to cure his lovely girl. During that period, Iris’s mother seemed to have lost all her hope about Iris, at the first beginning, Amy spent most of time helping her husband with Iris, leaving their little Grace with Iris’s godparents. However, everything was out of control,which made her exhausted, eventually, she gave it up, and acted everything never happened, went back on work and taking care of the little one.
Iris lived a happy and wealthy life before everything had happened. But now, her father paid each coin on her illness, the family gradually left nothing. Amy’s cousin Ann told Amy that if they can not cure the baby in the hospital, will they at least try taking Iris to the church, she heard there was someone who can save people from death. After thinking a long night, Amy decided to tell her desperate husband this crazy but the same desperate news. Len looked calm while Amy was telling him that news. He knew there was nothing he can do for his poorest baby girl, each hospital they went, each doctor they saw, all brought them nothing with hope, he knew he had done everything he could, but he did want to what Ann suggested, even though it seemed crazy. Not for even a second hesitation, he agreed.
