8、the Difficulties the Protagonist Faced ...

  • The protagonist, Andy Dufresen, faces a lot of difficulties, he is no longer a successful man with a promising career but a detested prisoner in a gloomy jailhouse. Andy is convicted and sentenced to two life imprisonments. The verdict was for murdering his wife because she has been unfaithful to Andy. Then Andy he is sent to the Shawshank prison. During the first couple of years of his imprisonment, he is assaulted by "the Sisters," a group of prisoners who sexually harass others. Although he persistently resists and fights back, Andy is still beaten brutally on a regular basis, but he never gives in. As a man born with a silver spoon in the mouth and has achieved so much, it is hard to swallow being in a jailhouse. The drastic change would crack any ordinary people on the first day, let alone the dreadful endless prison life. But Andy endures all these, he neither bursts to tears on the first day in prison, nor yield to “the Sisters” for better treatment. His stubborn spirit doesn’t help him get along well with his fellow cellmates until the warden finds out he could use Andy to laundry his money. However, although the warden provides Andy better working condition in prison, he is also the one who erases Andy’s last hope to right the wrong. The warden kills the witness who accidentally knows the real murderer in order to control Andy to continue to work for him. Andy becomes depressed after knowing the truth, but it this does not destroy his determination of escaping. On a stormy night, Andy creeps through a tunnel he secretly digs with only a six-inch rock hammer for 19 years. He seems to accept the truth that the rest of his life would be in prison. But as the story continues, the audience could notice that Andy never loses his hope for freedom even when he realizes the warden is the King of the Shawshanl prison, who can punish anyone disobeying his commands or even kills them. This movie also portrays other prisoners, some would rather violate their beliefs to get the parole, some kill themselves after being discharged. But what helps Andy maintains his hunger for freedom in this hopeless and corrupt place, I think it is his strong and unbreakable faith. With hope and determination, he can surely overcome any obstacles he encounters.
