Chun Chun’s care for Miao Miao showed the most clearly at the top of Jue Ying Feng. When seeing Miao Miao standing near the rift, he couldn’t help but hold out and pull him back. When seeing Miao Miao jumping down the rift, he couldn’t keep his heart from stopping beating and his lungs from stopping breathing even though he again and again persuaded himself that Miao Miao would never do anything reckless.
If care was when he worried about Miao Miao getting hurt, then what it was when he himself felt pain seeing Miao Miao hurt? A lie about him loving Ming Zun made Miao Miao leave in loneliness, but it also left him stay in pain. This is also the first time Chun Chun let his feeling for Miao Miao escape his heart. For a person as calm and controlled as Chun Chun, when pain gets to the point it cannot be contained inside him, could it be driven by care alone? Or, was it love?
Chun Chun himself may have realised his feeling at this stage too, and that was the reason why he felt reluctant to call Ji Miao Hua (姬妙花)Miao Miao. He described this as a mountain hindering two sides, a barricade that he wasn’t ready to remove. If there was nothing to barricade, what must he keep that barricade for?
For Chun Chun, realising his feeling towards Miao Miao was one thing, accepting it was another. However, even though he didn’t want to accept it, his feeling still afterwards grew to a new level where it could no longer be hiden inside him.
I still remember how his disappointment when knowing Miao Miao left him at the time the poison took effect and his delight when being told how far Miao Miao had gone to take revenge for him were both shown on his face. When Miao Miao got injured at Ping An hotel, he was so worried that he broke the window sill, hurt himself and didn’t notice it. When Miao Miao turned around and left, the pain he felt got to a point that even Xie Ling Bi couldn’t help but interfere. And although it was not clearly described, Chun Chun’s reaction when seeing Miao Miao’s lonesome figure in Feng Que Ling did make Ming Zun squeeze his eyebrows when looking back.
This continued even when Chun Chun got back to Bi Ni mountain, evidenced by his reaction every time Xi Qiang was mentioned, long sleepless nights and constant thinking back about the moon in Jue Ying Feng.
On the day Miao Miao got to Bi Ni mountain, I, same as many people, was shocked at how Chun Chun accepted him so fast and easy. But, if I look at it from Chun Chun’s point of view, maybe this is not so much of a sudden.
Chun Chun had for long wanted Miao Miao to go with him to Zhong Yuan (中原). Back to the time in Jue Ying Feng, when Miao Miao said they would go together to Zhong Yuan for new year celebration, Chun Chun almost jumped up with joy. The next day, when he thought Miao Miao would let him go, all he felt was a surprise and a fast beating heart. In both cases, he would eventually be back to Zhong Yuan, but whether or not Miao Miao accompanied him made the difference.
Therefore, for Chun Chun, when Miao Miao came to Bi Ni mountain, it was a lost hope regained and a wish granted. And when he accepted to ‘follow’ Miao Miao, it was a love requitted and a guilt redeemed. There is no doubt that his decision to follow Miao Miao was an act of impulse, and two of them still have a long way to go before they can stay together for a life time; however, at this moment, I still wanna raise my thumb up and tell him, good decision.
